Snow Where'd you Go?

January 2026

The 2026 season was a heartbreak for those of us who live for the mountains. After a brief glimmer of hope in February, a record-breaking March heatwave moved in and stayed, effectively "sizzling away" the Southern California snowpack in a matter of weeks. By April 1st, traditionally the peak of the season, places like Big Bear and Mountain High were looking at bare grass and mud where there should have been feet of powder. Watching the local resorts close their gates early while the rest of the Sierra saw late-season surges was a tough pill to swallow—a stark reminder of how fragile our "local" winter can be.
